It's been more than a month since we Apple showed off his iPhone 16. But there are still those critical voices who mention how iPhones are still the same. Yes they are, that cannot be contradicted. The question is rather why and what does it actually matter?
Take when Apple introduced the iPhone 3G. It was actually the first iPhone, but with a plastic back. The iPhone 3GS then looked exactly the same as the iPhone 3G. The iPhone 4 and 4S, then the 5 and 5S, and indeed the first SE had the same design, as well as the iPhone 6, 6S, 7 and 8. So it's surprising that anyone is now surprised that the iPhone 11 will be released as the iPhone 14 and iPhone 16 have not moved anywhere in terms of design compared to the iPhone 15.
Only the puzzles are different
There are changes here, but they are smaller than before and are based on hardware limitations and the form factor itself. It is certain that all future iPhones will actually look very similar until Apple it won't come with a flexible device that will somehow change it like they did Apple Watch Ultra. Even so, the Series is still clearly identifiable, as will be the "regular" iPhones.
The design also works. Although a less knowledgeable customer cannot tell at first glance whether it is an iPhone 14 or 15, the iPhone 16 at least has a different photo module, which makes them distinctive. But the important thing is that even at first glance, everyone knows that it is an iPhone. With the Pro series, there are more similarities between generations. But does this still have the same design? Only if you need to announce that you have the latest iPhone and she can't tell based on the design.
The competition is the same
Apple he is not alone in not going far in the field of appearance. Even Google practically only changes the form of the photo module with the location of the lenses. Samsung even took it to the extreme, when it unified the design across the entire portfolio. Only the Galaxy S Ultra models stand out in it, otherwise each of its smartphones has a fairly clear unified design with a minimalistic triple camera. And it doesn't matter if it's a Galaxy S24 or a Galaxy A15. The financial difference between the phones is around 15 thousand.
It's hard to come up with anything with the front of the phone when it's just a display. Apple at least he changed the cutout in Dynamic Island, which can be modified even further, i.e. shrink or put its sensors under the display. The Android competition here has a slot for a selfie camera, with which they cannot come up with much. It has already left curved displays, so all the designers' innovations can be focused around the photo module and the material of the back of the phone. After all, the frame has already changed the material and surface treatment.
Apple glass on the back of the device has been used since the iPhone 8 and probably nothing will change. But Chinese manufacturers are trying it differently, for example with artificial leather, even wood. Apple it has a tinted back glass from last generation, and there would definitely be room for creativity, where it could be made somehow structured or annealed, etc. But that would disturb the clean design. So we can't expect any wilds from Apple. So if you don't like the current iPhone design, you're simply out of luck.
