Basics of the Password application
The Passwords app is automatically installed when you update to iOS 18, iPadOS 18 or macOS Sequoia. The app has a simple layout with a search bar at the top so you can easily find the information you need.mace. If you've already used Keychain, all of your saved logins and passwords are ready to use once you verify your identity with Face ID or Touch ID. The app has separate sections for passwords and logins, access keys, two-factor authentication codes, Wi-Fi passwords, security warnings, and deleted logins. Tapping on any of the sections will show you its contents. Tapping on a specific item will show you the login and password. Each item has fields for the website or app name, username, login details, verification code, websites where the login is used, and notes. There is also an option to change the password with a single tap for each given item.
Adding logins and passwords
To add a login or password to the Passwords app, simply tap the + button at the bottom of the main interface. The Passwords app will automatically fill in the new entry with the password, so all you have to do is add the website name and username, then copy the password and paste it into the app, website, or service you're signing up for. Tap Save to save the information.mace.
To add informationmace to an existing item, you can tap the appropriate section, such as All, find the login you want to update, tap it, and then select Edit to enter the editing interface to add notes, change the password, or add a verification code.
Logins and passwords are automatically added to the Passwords app when you have it enabled. iCloud Keychain and create new credentials in Safari or in the application.
Changing passwords
To change your password, just open the Passwords app, find the login you want to update, tap Edit, then tap Change Password…. You can also browse passwords in the All section.
Clicking Change Password will open the website associated with your login information and password, but you will need to start the password change process on the website by logging into your account and finding the appropriate option to update your password.
Deleting passwords
To delete a password, go to the All section and scroll until you find it, or search for a specific login. In the All overview, you can swipe from right to left to show the delete option - then just tap Delete.
You can also tap one of your login details, select Edit, and select Clear Password. To delete multiple credentials, tap the Select tool in the upper right corner of the screen (it looks like a bulleted list), then tap any credentials you want to delete. When done, tap Delete again to delete them all.
Passwords you've deleted are stored in the Deleted folder in the Passwords app for 30 days before they're permanently deleted. You can tap this folder and swipe to delete logins and passwords instantly. You can also use the select button at the top to delete multiple logins at once.
Verification codes
Passwords can provide two-factor authentication codes for websites that offer additional security options. To add a two-factor authentication code, tap the Codes section in the main Passwords interface. Click the + button here. You can either scan the QR code with your camera, which is the usual way two-factor authentication apps work, or enter your key settings. Once the code is saved in the Passwords app, you can always open the Codes section to get a temporary code to sign in to a website or app.
Two-factor authentication codes also appear when you search for password and login information or browse your login information in the All section.
Access keys
Websites have started switching from passwords to access keys, and the Passwords app stores these keys just like your logins and passwords. Access keys are more secure than passwords and allow you to log in to your accounts using authentication. Face ID or Touch ID on the device Apple. Basically, they use a cryptographic key pair, with one public key stored on the server and the private key stored on your device. Private keys are not shared, stay only on the device and cannot be sent to other people, protecting your accounts from phishing attempts.
