Google is definitely one of the leaders in web application development. I wouldn't hesitate to call Gmail the best free email solution. Gmail formatted for iPhone created in HTML5 I admire every day and sometimes I prefer to use it than the mail client in iPhone.
Although Google might notchat Gmail on the iPad screen formatted the same as on the desktop, so they probably weren't satisfied with this solution. So they took iPhone UI and slightly modified it for the iPad screen. See for yourself, I think Gmail for iPad is really good!
The new version never started on my iPhone :-( I still only have the old one. The same with mobile Google
