Apple For a long time, it offered password management exclusively as a personal tool, but in recent versions of the system it has finally added the ability to share. This allows you to securely share your saved logins and passwords with family, colleagues, or friends — directly via Safari, without the need to use external applications.

Sharing without unnecessary rewriting

Previously, passwords could be viewed and shared, but only one at a time and with a few extra steps. The new system simplifies this: you create a group, choose what data you want to share, and group members see it directly in their login menus in SafariIf the password is changed later, it is automatically updated for everyone — without the need to resend it.

How to set up password sharing on Macu

  • Open it Safari and in the top bar select Safari → Settings → Passwords.
  • Using a password or Touch ID unlock access to stored data.
  • In the left sidebar, select the Family section.
  • Click Add users and select people you have saved in your Contacts app.
  • Then choose the specific logins or websites you want to share.
  • This creates a group with which you can securely manage access to accounts – for example, streaming services, a family online store, or a booking account.

How sharing works in practice

Once you add members to a shared group, their Safari will take care of the rest. Whenever they visit a website whose login details you shared, Safari will offer to fill in the password automatically – just as if it were their own. But you still have full control. You can remove or change the password from the share at any time without having to explain anything to others.

Safety first

Apple uses end-to-end encryption for password sharing, which means your data is protected from the moment it is sent to the moment it is viewed by the other person. Not even Apple does not have access to passwords. The feature thus offers an ideal combination of convenience and security that most external password managers cannot offer.

Why use password sharing?

Sharing passwords can be useful not only within a family, but also within a small work team. For example, you can securely manage shared accounts without the risk of someone accidentally sending sensitive data in an email. Plus, you can be sure that everyone is always using the latest version of the password.
