Even the most careful iPhone owners can sometimes get the dreaded message on their phone's screen warning that liquid has been detected in the connector of their Apple smartphone. Such a message is certainly not pleasant, but it does not necessarily mean the end of the world (including your iPhone). How to proceed in such moments?
As a precaution, the said message prevents you from charging or using accessories with your iPhone until it is dry. It states that you should unplug everything and wait a few hours for that to happen. But is that all you can do? And is your iPhone safe until then?
A warning about liquid in the connector can appear, for example, if you get your iPhone wet, fall into water, or if you use it for a long time, for example in a steamy bathroom. Most modern iPhones are waterproof, but that doesn't mean they're 100% water-resistant.
Without passing an electric current through the metal, the liquid shouldn't cause any damage—unless it leaves moisture on some components. Therefore Apple the Lightning connector deactivates when the iPhone detects the presence of liquid in it. This is because the current could cause metal corrosion and the connector would stop working.
What to do when iPhone detects liquid?
If the iPhone detects liquid in the Lightning connector, you can use it without connecting anything. However, to have the best chance of avoiding damage, you'd better follow the steps below and make sure your iPhone is completely dry.
- Disconnect any cables or accessories connected to the iPhone.
- Hold the iPhone with the Lightning port facing down and gently tap it with your palm to release the liquid from the port.
- Place iPhone in an open, ventilated and dry place.
- Wait at least 30 minutes before using the device again.
- If the same warning appears again, there may be liquid residue under the Lightning pins - allow the iPhone to dry for 24 hours before trying again.
- Be sure not to put the iPhone in rice, try to dry it with a hair dryer or on a radiator, and do not insert any cotton buds or other objects into the Lightning port.
Liquid detection alerts aren't a new iPhone or iOS feature, but Apple recently updated the icon. Now, however, a yellow warning triangle with a blue drop of water inside is also part of the relevant notification.
