Although we are still more than two years away from the launch of the 2028 iPhone, the first concrete outlines are already starting to leak from the supply chain. This model will follow on from the upcoming anniversary phone from 2027, which is expected to feature a radical all-glass design with curves on all four sides. But history repeats itself. The first generation of such a major design change usually brings with it minor technological concessions, and it will be the 2028 version that Apple will bring the whole concept to perfection.
If you are planning to buy a new one in the fall iPhone 18 Pro and stick to the tried-and-true two-year replacement cycle, this is the device you'll be looking at in 2028. Here's a look at six key new features that are reportedly in the works for this model, according to insiders:
- Flawless, distortion-free curved display: Annual iPhone The 2027 model will likely use a magnesium-silver alloy cathode layer, which can cause unwanted image distortion, loss of brightness, or overheating at curved edges. The 2028 version will address this issue by switching to highly transparent indigo zinc oxide (IZO) cathodes, which, according to South Korean newspaper ETNews, will ensure perfectly even backlighting all the way to the edges.
- A final goodbye to Dynamic Island: According to DSCC analyst Ross Young, it is highly unlikely that the technology for location Face ID under the screen is 100% ready for 2027. The 2028 model is therefore a much hotter candidate for the launch of a phone with an absolutely clean display, or perhaps just with an inconspicuous hole for the front camera.
- Margins reduced to minimum: The same change in the cathode layer (IZO) material will allow engineers to narrow the black bezels around the display even more than they did on the anniversary model, taking the device another significant step towards the vision of a bezel-less display.
- Tandem OLED dual-layer technology: After its successful deployment in the iPad Pro M4, Tandem OLED should also find its way into smartphones. By layering two organic diodes on top of each other, the display will have noticeably higher brightness, longer lifespan and significantly lower energy consumption. A simplified varianta from LG Display, which only doubles the blue subpixel.
- Super-powerful "A22 Pro" chip with 1,4nm process: The performance leap will be ensured by the transition from a 2-nanometer architecture to an extremely advanced 1,4nm process (referred to by TSMC as A14). According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, this processor will offer 15% faster speed with the same consumption, or vice versa 30% lower energy requirements with the same performance. It is even considered that Intel could provide part of the production.
- 200MP periscope telephoto lens: Infomacfrom the Chinese network Weibo and reports from the investment bank Morgan Stanley indicate that Apple is intensively testing a 200-megapixel periscope sensor in its laboratories. Such a high resolution will allow for images to be taken with an extreme amount of detail and will offer the possibility of significant digital cropping without any loss of quality.
Even though there is still plenty of time left until the official premiere and some details may change before the start of series production, the indicated direction clearly shows that the 2028 model year will be for Apple signifying the transition from a bold experiment to a technologically mature product.
