If you click on the Mac product line, you will see two laptops and four desktops. In the case of MacBooks, these are the MacBook Air and Pro series, and in the case of Macs, the models mini, Studio, Pro and iMac. Is this enough choice for the customer?

Among the desktops, it can be said that everyone has a choice. There is a basis in the model mini, professional options in the Studio model and for the most demanding ones it is ready varianta Pro. Although we only have a 24" model for the iMac, it would certainly be a good idea to expand this line with something larger, but anyone who wants this modern All-in-one solution from Apple has the option. With the MacBook, it is significantly reduced to just two lines.

To some extent, this is also due to the introduction of the M3 MacBook Air, which effectively replaced the M1 model. The entire line is thus identical in design and starts with the 13" model with the M2 chip and the amount of 29 KčThe basic new model with the M3 chip starts at just 2 thousand higher, while the 15" model costs 38 thousand. KčIf we don't go for extreme configurations, you will pay 15 thousand for a 3" M16 Air with 512GB RAM and 50GB SSD. Kč. Incidentally, this is the same amount that the 14" MacBook Pro with an M3 chip, 8GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD starts at. The 16" model has a starting price of 74 Kč.

But could any other model fit in between the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro? Not really, because the higher Air configurations cover that. Over 50 thousand Kč It's quite full, especially considering the different configurations of the 14" Pro model, which is graded in increments of about 5 thousand depending on how the RAM, disk and of course the varianta chip, where we have both the M3 Pro and the M3 Max.

Is there room for a "MacBook" return?

Apple but had a wider port in modern historyfolio MacBooks, when the Air and Pro models were accompanied by the MacBook, which no longer bore any nickname. Before 2010, it was a small plastic model, before Apple completely switched to unibody aluminum. In 2015, he introduced the 12" MacBook, which did not gain much traction on the market, and in 2018 it was actually replaced by the 13" MacBook Air.

Last year we saw an increase, when at WWDC23 the company introduced the 15" MacBook Air, which has now received a successor with an M3 chip. But the M1 MacBook Air has definitely dropped out of our portfolio. On the one hand, there is the fact that in terms of design, it didn't have to fit too well into the portfolio, because it was based on the appearance of the MacBook from 2015. But Apple now offers us four MacBook models, all of which look exactly the same and differ in screen size. There is a 13" Air, 14" Pro, 15" Air and 16" Pro. So why reduce the diagonal and come back with the 12" one?

Previously, the Air also had two diagonals, when the 13" one was complemented by a smaller display, namely 11". We received its first generation in 2010 and the last in 2015, when it was just replaced by an inch larger MacBook (you can also look at the history of the MacBook Air here). I personally use a Mac for office work mini and I have a 13" M2 MacBook Air for travel. I chose it because it simply isn't any smaller variaBut I would be very happy to be satisfied with it. When I travel, I need to work sporadically and as "lightly" as possible.

I don't want to carry a 15" diagonal in a packed backpack, when not only the dimensions but also the weight are a problem. Having owned a 12" MacBook (two generations of it), I know that it had its place in the market and that it was an amazingly compact machine. In addition, we now have a new form of design that will certainly not change for a year, so one cannot hope that Apple it will keep the display size, but will reduce the chassis. So personally, I see that yes, there is still room for the MacBook here, and it would be enough to just reduce the size of the current Air by that inch. Even if the price here drops by only 2 thousand Kč, for my needs it would still be more convenient.

I'm still amazed at how it is Apple giant company, how limited is its portfolio. A few phones a year, a few computers, a few watches and headphones, one smart box and two speakers that it doesn't even distribute to all markets. One design identical for all models in the series. Isn't that too restrictive, limiting and simply not enough?
