The Studio Display is a new and also appropriately expensive display Applu, which the company introduced along with the computer Mac StudioIt stands out not only for its price, but also for its capabilities, as it contains the A13 Bionic chip known from the iPhones. However, this product is not perfect either, and a significant part of the criticism is directed at its integrated camera.

After the first ones reviews because its quality was subjected to relatively strong criticism. On paper, everything looks fine, because it has a 12 MPx resolution, an f/2,4 aperture and a 122-degree angle of view, and it is also capable of Centering the shot, but it suffers from significant noise and poor contrast. There was no satisfaction even with regard to the aforementioned centering of the shot.

Apple in addition, he issued a statement that this is a bug that he will fix with a system update. But because this display is smart, it can work for him Apple release updates fairly easily. Therefore, a beta version of the update is already available to developers, which is labeled "Apple Studio Display Firmware Update 15.5". So it might seem that when the update is officially released, everything will be fixed. But that is a false assumption in this case.

Poor quality is not a software bug

Although the update solves certain shortcomings with regard to noise and contrast, which the developers confirm, it also works better with cropping, but the results are still quite pale. The problem is not in the software, but in the hardware. Apple Although it proudly claims that 12 MPx is enough for sharp images, and it proves this in the case of iPhones. But while iPhones have a wide-angle front camera, here is ultrawide-angle, so that it can fully use the new Center Stage function.

It uses machine learning in particular to always center the image on the person present during the video call, or several people in the shot. Since there is no zoom, everything is digitally cropped, which is also the case with regular photos. It means that either Apple whatever the software does, it can't get more out of the hardware.

Does it matter at all?

The front camera on the Studio Display is intended for video calls and video conferences, where many other participants have devices with even worse camera quality. You probably won't be filming with this display. YouTube videos or wanted to take portrait photos, so it's actually fine for those calls. And that's also considering the Centering of the shot.

But I personally have a little problem with that. Although it can look effective in the case of one person, once there are more of them, it also suffers from many shortcomings. This is because the shot is constantly zooming in and out and moving from right to left, and in certain ways it can be worse than better. Therefore, it would be necessary to fine-tune the various algorithms more and not to try to really capture everything on the scene, but at least the important things.
