Native Finder application within the operating system macOS offers several different modes for viewing content, i.e. files and folders. One of them is the list view, which offers a lot of options for working and customizing. Today, let's take a look at some useful tips and tricks for working in the list view in Finder.

Sort by criteria

In list view, the native Finder offers Macu rich sorting and sorting options. Open the desired folder in Finder and then click the icon with lines in the bar at the top of the window. In the menu that appears, select the desired sorting parameters. If you have a lot of items in the folder and want to see some of the older ones, head to the Date Modified section above the list of items. Hover your mouse cursor over the appropriate field until an arrow symbol appears, and click to sort the items from oldest to newest.

Resize columns

You can also play around with column widths appropriately in Finder's list view. First, aim the mouse cursor at the divider between two columns until a cursor with an arrow appears instead of the classic cursor. Then just click and drag to adjust the column width. If you want to quickly maximize the width of a given column, just double-click the dividing line with the mouse.

Adding more columns

In the native Finder on MacYou can also quickly and easily add new columns with criteria in the list view. There are two ways to do this. In the Finder, open the corresponding folder, hold down the Option (Alt) key and right-click on any category in the bar above the list (see gallery). In the menu that appears, you can then simply check the next desired sorting criterion (for example, Date Added, Last Opened, Notes, and more). The second option is to click on the View in the bar at the top of the screen Macu. In the menu that appears, select Display options and check the desired items in the Show columns section.

Calculating folder sizes

If you are in list view in Finder on MacIf you have your items sorted by size, you may notice that the folders are missing their size information. Fortunately, this is the default setting that you can easily change. In the bar at the top of your screen, Macu Click View -> Display Options. At the bottom of the window that appears, check the Show all sizes option and click Set as default.

View folder contents

If in Finder on MacWhen you switch to list view, you can quickly and easily view the contents of individual folders without having to open them. Simply click on the folder with your mouse and then press the right arrow key. If this doesn't work for you, click the toolbar at the top of your screen. Macu on View and make sure that Use Groups is not activated.
